Water is essential for living. It is said that the human can survive on water alone for up to two months even without the lack of food.

Overhead tanks installed across facilities are a great way of facilitating water storage and constant flow, where required. It is also considered the best solution to pressurize the hydraulic system. But water flow has to be controlled to avoid wastage and overflow.

Advanced water level control devices are installed to control the functioning of a pump, fitted across the overhead tank. With these devices, water supply issues are duly resolved and particularly are a blessing to the farming and agriculture industry that always has been at a dearth for water. Besides, both domestic, and industrial units are also benefited from water level controlling devices across a variety of systems other than just overhead tanks. Functionally, water level controllers are meant to optimize the performance of the system while also regulating the flow of water.

Automatic water level controllers

To ensure a constant reserve across your overhead tank, it is important that water levels are automatically controlled. Automated water level controllers act as arresters that shut the motor off when water is not required. The overhead tank is filled automatically as the level controller senses the lack of water thus successfully monitoring essential water levels within the container.

When there is a drop in the level of water, the automatic controller switches the motor on and when full, shuts it off. It senses water fill up to or above a fixed level. Also, if the pump is running dry or when the sump water is exhausted before the overhead tank fills, the motor switches off to maintain voltage fluctuations. Advanced state-of-the-art digital technology micro-controller-based products are quite versatile – tailored variations are also created to suit the control of multiple tanks and pumps.

Common Features

Online and offline stores do offer a variety of water level control devices. But preference is always given to fully automated designs that are customized for individual requirements of facilities.

Reduce the consumption of electricity as the automatic water level controller in chennai device manipulates functions of the motor to avoid wastage of power and water considerably. The motor is protected from running dry, thus ensuring its durability and longevity.

Power fluctuations are also handled well, especially when the motor is switched on. Uninterrupted water supply is ensured by the device as the water level drops below a particular level, in the overhead tank. Twenty-Four hours of water supply is maintained when the underground tank gets empty, or the overhead tank is full.

Program automatic devices to pump water according to an adjusted timer. These electronics are in great demand because human intervention is not required at all. Specially designed sensors embedded in the level control devices monitor water levels. These are extremely safe, plastic-molded, and non-corrosive, as a result of which last longer.

Advantages of water level control devices

While there are several benefits of using automated water level control devices – some of the most important ones are:

Non-requirement of manual control: The device operates automatically using switches that adjust timers, and therefore do not necessarily invite human intrusion.

When the underground tank gets empty, the motor switches off automatically. This way, dry running is also avoided as specially designed sensors are deployed to monitor water levels of both the tanks.

Pumps cannot be running at odd hours – especially during the night when usage is low. Thus, peak hour water supply, particularly during the morning, is ensured, and eventually, water levels are maintained at their optimum even during the day and sometimes at night.

Due to their demand and popularity, automated water level control devices are highly affordable and are consequent to helping save power, water and maintain the durability of the pumps.

Water level control circuit

To understand better here is the depiction of a simple circuit [Figure 1] that controls the water level controller in the overhead tank.

It is built using components such as CMOS IC CD4001, Transistor BC547 and the battery.

A flexible and versatile 14 pin IC, the CMOS IC CD4001 contains 4 NOR gates each of which has one output and two inputs. The IC thus contains 4 output and 8 input pins, a VCC pin that is connected to the +ve voltage supply and another VSS connected to the negative. The device includes some basic features such as Max supply voltage of 15V, Min supply voltage of 3V, an operational speed of 4MHz, etc. where it can be used in metal detectors and others.

The Transistor BC547 NPN bipolar junction transistor aids in amplification and switching purposes with a max current gain of about 800. (When used as an amplifier, it is used CE Configuration)

The battery powers up the circuit and comes with a DC supply of 9V

How does it work?

To drive the relay the circuit utilizes the CMOS IC CD 4001 / 4011, the input gate 1 of which is connected to the probe that detects water levels. One probe is connected to the ground and another one to gate 1 of the IC.Thereafter, the input of gate 1 remains high, the relay driver transistor begins conducting, and the output pin 4 goes high as the probe A connected to the IC gate 1, gets floating. The relay stays on as the NO contacts of the relay and power supply are connected to the common. With the rise of the water levels, probes and A and B come into contact, the relay de-energizes and the output of the IC turns low. All working of the relay can be visualized with the help of an LED.

Initially, the input pin1 of the IC is at logic high and the output at pin3 will be at logic low according to the NOR gate truth table and A and B are not connected when the automatic water level controller in coimbatore is low. Input to other NOR gate will also be logic low signals because pin3 is shorted to pins 5 and 6. The corresponding output pin 4 gives a logic high signal and as current flows through the resistor to the base of the transistor conduction is initiated and it begins acting as a closed switch.

Thus, current flows through probes A and B as they are connected through the water when the level of the water rises.
